Event Overview In 1975, an avid group of gardeners that included Audrey Wychopen, Ted and Lynda Usher, Bill Markwick, and Olga and Bill Bishop, launched the Bond Head & District Horticultural Society. Their goal was to share and promote the joys of gardening, both among themselves and with others, beautifying their community and providing opportunities for learning.
In 1991, when the hamlet of Bond Head became part of the new municipality of Bradford West Gwillimbury, the Society expanded its interests and membership to include the town of Bradford and surrounding areas. The Horticultural Society became a means of uniting the newly amalgamated municipality, bringing together its residents through programs that included garden tours, flower shows, development of an arboretum, and participation in Communities in Bloom, a competition that challenged municipalities to create public garden displays.
The Society was also instrumental in selecting the new municipality’s Official Flower, the Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia).
In March of 2015, the Bond Head & District Horticultural Society changed to the Bond Head/Bradford Garden Club, reflecting its expanded role in the community. As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Club continues to attract new members to its monthly meetings, educational workshops, guest speakers, plant sales and auctions. It plays an ongoing role in the beautification of the town, maintaining floral displays that include the Audrey Wychopen Memorial Parkette in Bond Head and Rotary Park in Bradford, expanding the knowledge and enjoyment of gardening through ongoing education, and always “growing together”.
